The Symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven

All Ludwig van Beethoven Symphonies in transcriptions for piano by Franz Liszt

Chamber Hall of the Moscow International House of Music.
November 9 2012 – April 26 2013

The Festival presents a programme whose complexity is unique: four concerts will include all Beethoven symphonies in transcriptions for piano by Liszt.

The virtuosity of Liszt’s texture is extremely demanding, which is why these transcriptions are so rarely heard in concert halls. It is no mere chance that leading representatives of Russian and foreign piano schools have been invited to take part in the project: Peter Laul, a venerable St. Petersburg pianist, and Andrei Gugnin, a brilliant young virtuoso, the winner of several international competitions; Yury Favorin, a laureate of the Queen Elisabeth Piano Competition and the Olivier Messiaen Competition; Vyacheslav Gryaznov, holder of the first prizes and Grand Prix of many international competitions; Alexei Chernov, a laureate of more than 20 international competitions, including the Tchaikovsky Competition – undoubted leaders of the new generation, pianists, composers and authors of transcriptions for piano, continuing the “grand concert style” traditions of Franz Liszt, a virtuoso and a thinker.

A special event of the cycle is the participation of Christopher Taylor, a remarkable American pianist and a Steinway-artist, and a French duet of Jean-François Heisser (a celebrated pianist and conductor, the President of the Ravel International Music Academy) and Elena Filonova, who will perform the famous Ninth Symphony, played in the 1850s by the duet of Franz Liszt and Anton Rubinstein.
